Elsie MacGill

August 1st 2023 - This new circulation coin honours Elsie MacGill, an extraordinary woman whose life and achievements are among the most exceptional and noteworthy Canadian stories of the 20th century
Elizabeth Muriel Gregory “Elsie” MacGill was born on March 27, 1905 in Vancouver, BC. She went to public school as a child and attended the University of British Columbia in applied science. Two years later she applied and was accepted as the first woman in the University of Toronto’s School of Practical Science electrical engineering program.
In 1938, she became the first woman to be elected to the Engineering Institute of Canada.
During her time at the Canadian Car and Foundry, she became the first woman in the world to design an aircraft—the Maple Leaf Trainer II.
During World War II, Elsie supervised the production of over 1,450 Hawker Hurricane aircraft. This earned her the nickname “Queen of the Hurricanes.”
As a lifetime women’s rights advocate, Elsie dedicated herself to the Canadian Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs—both as a member and later as the provincial and national president.
The effegy of Queen Elizabeth II is on the face side.

The Transformative Artistry of Jean Paul Riopelle

October 3 2023 - On the 100th anniversary of the birth of legendary visual artist Jean Paul Riopelle, the Royal Canadian Mint has issued new $2 circulation coins recognizing his status as one of Canada’s and the world’s most influential artists of the mid-20th century.
The captivating artwork showcases a section of Panel 29 from his monumental fresco L’Hommage à Rosa Luxemburg, that features acrylic and spray-painted silhouettes – including the emblematic birds seen on this coin. The fresco is largely composed of symbolic representations of the life he shared with his long-time partner, American painter Joan Mitchell.
Original, experimental, exceptional. Jean Paul Riopelle defied convention with a cutting-edge approach to his craft—from mosaics, to sculpture, to spray paint, and more. As one of the first Canadian artists whose work was globally recognized for its significance, Riopelle remains an inspiration to this day, encouraging artists of all disciplines to follow their intuition.
Riopelle died on March 12, 2002, in Isles-aux-Grues, Quebec
The effegy of Queen Elizabeth II is on the face side.
